The pier at Nassau

Nassau is the capital city of the Bahamas and it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. While many people come to the Bahamas to enjoy its island beaches, they come to Nassau for its rich culture, food, nightlife, and its friendly people. If you only have a short time in the Bahamas and you want to make the most of its capital, we’ve made a short list of the 5 best things to do in Nassau!

1) Take a Boat Trip from Nassau!

Obviously, we’d put a boat trip at the top of our list… We offer boat excursions from Nassau here at Bahamas Jet Boat and we’re based in the beautiful Elizabeth on Bay shopping mall in Downtown Nassau. While it’s great to explore the Bahamas on foot, there’s nothing like racing across the water on our superfast jetboat! You can opt for a 1-hour Junkanoo Breeze Tour or a 3-hour Escape to Margaritaville Tour; book both Bahama boat trips here. Our boat tours offer an adrenaline-fuel experience but they’re also a great way to explore the waters around Nassau and see the Bahamas from a different perspective!

2) Chill on Nassau Paradise Islands’ Stunning Beaches

Cabbage Beach on Nassau Paradise Island

Let’s face it, you probably decided to visit the Bahamas because you wanted a decadent beach holiday. Well, it doesn’t get much more decadent than Nassau Paradise Island! There is a range of gorgeous beaches to choose from, with plenty of quieter, more secluded spots amongst the hustle and bustle. Nassau Paradise Island can be found to the northeast of the main island. There is a beach called Pink Sands Beach that has — you’ve guessed it — pink sand! You should also visit Cable Beach (perhaps the most popular), Love Beach, Cabbage Beach, and Saunders Beach. To be honest, any beach you visit in Nassau or Nassau Paradise Island is guaranteed to impress. Just make sure you set aside enough time properly relax during your visit!

3) Take a Nassau Food Tasting and Walking Tour

Nassau is home to over 70% of the entire population of the Bahamas, and with this many people, you can be sure it has the best food in all of the islands! You can (and should) explore the city by yourself and try out the local cuisine. However, if you want to experience the most authentic Bahaman dishes and learn about the culture, you should consider taking a Nassau food tasting and walking tour. This way, you’ll get to try several delicious local dishes that the tour companies have made sure are of the highest quality and truly represent Bahaman cuisine. You can’t truly know a place until you’ve eaten its food!

4) Visit Blue Lagoon Island

If you’re visiting the Bahamas as a family, you should definitely consider visiting Blue Lagoon Island, just three miles from Nassau. This private island is perfect for families as there are sights and activities to please everyone. You can chill on the stunning beaches and perhaps take a dip in the turquoise waters, or you can enjoy the range of fun activities available, such as water-skiing, fishing, sailing, scuba diving, snorkelling, and more. You can easily get to Blue Lagoon Island by island from Nassau’s harbour. Just keep an eye out for the dolphins and sea lions that live in the water around the island.

5) The National Art Gallery of the Bahamas

National Art Gallery of the Bahamas

Just as you’ll probably need at least one day where you’re not out in the gorgeous Bahaman sunshine, we highly recommend the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas. While a food tour may be the best way to get a taste for Nassau, taking in the art and history of the Bahamas is a very close second. The National Art Gallery of the Bahamas is a beautiful building packed full of the best traditional and contemporary art from the Bahamas. This is a good option both for people travelling on their own and in large groups. You can look through the gallery independently or pay for a guided tour. There are regular exhibitions that are held by visiting artists, so make sure to look on the website (linked above) to see if there’s a particular exhibition that interests you!

That’s all we have time for today’s blog. Nassau is one of the best places to visit in the Bahamas, but there’s so much to see and do that it can be a little overwhelming. So, we hope we’ve helped a few readers planning their next trip to the Bahamas figures out one or two things to do in Nassau.
